wed like to introduce you to this giant of musical endeavour, the colossus of rio, as hes known. for edÕs sweetly agreed to be our point man on all matters smooth for this latest tstd collection, where we take a dive into an often overlooked side of brazilian music: brazilian soul, funk and aor.

with many influences, the musicians of la mano create a peculiar sound, a rock-salsa-ra•-reggae-rap cocktail which they baptize patchanka. manu chao, who writes lyrics, gives to the patchanka a more personal definition: a popular dance with apache lyrics and chorizo spirit. the band starts touring across france in october 1987 and rapidly establishes a solid reputation. a few months later, when the second record putas fever is released, the success is obvious. tracks sung in french, spanish or arabic, pas assez de toi, king kong five or sidi hbibi are immediate hits. after a long live-cruise in 1992 along the south american coasts, la mano negra gets back to france and separates in 1994. its hard to tell the impact of la mano negra across french and spanish speaking countries, with as many particular experiences that people lived during their tours.

das soul-trio the hues corporation wurde 1969 in santa monica, ca. von st. clair lee, fleming williams und hubert ann kelley gegrŸndet. dank eines auftritts im beruehmten blaxploitation-film blacula und drei songs auf dem dazugehoerigen soundtrack, feierten sie 1972 ihren durchbruch. kurz darauf wurden sie von rca unter vertrag genommen und veroeffentlichten ihr albumdebuet freedom for the stallion. das album erscheint nun als exklusive wiederveroeffentlichung via bbr und ist erstmalig auf cd erhaeltlich. zwei bonus tracks plus booklet mit umfangreichen liner notes. ein muss fŸr alle r&b-, disco-, funk- und soul-fans!
